The act of improvising : ad-lib, extemporization, impromptu, unplanned, spontaneous. Composition performance that is composed on the spur-of-the moment by the performer, constructed as you go along, usually as a solo, or cadenza.

A growing number of contemporary dancers are including a greater degree of improvisation in their performance. According to theorists, a dancer improvising a performance must be completely trusting their own instincts,reacting to internal and external stimuli. In an environment in which anything can happen, a dancer learns to trust his instincts instead of using programmed motives. Improvisation is an artistic expression used as a tool for self-understanding and a means for exploring natural movement.
